Just had a surgical tute with this surgeon who’s notorious for his appalling bedside manners, but seems to get away with it coz he’s so good at what he does, like an operation that normally takes 5 hours, he can do it in TWO!
He’s really like this chinese ah pek…
At the tutorial (him and 4 of us)…
Surgeon: Now tell me, what’s the half-life of the parathyroid hormone? (looks at me)… YOU!
Me: (totally no idea).. Err.. 30 days?
Surgeon: WHAT!!! THIRTY DAYS!! The patient will die already!! (sic) *looks at my groupmate*… YOU, tell me…
Groupmate #1: Err.. 2 weeks?
Groupmate # 2: Err.. 5 days?
Groupmate # 3: 48 hours?
Surgeon: It’s 8 hours!!!! Ahh.. I don’t think I want you as my interns next year, you better be a nurse! (how condescending)… Did you hear about the intern who took care of a patient and didn’t do such and such… He was deemed impotent!!
No one dared correct him…
What a day… It’s a good thing we know he’s a bit like that so no one took it personally…
